I understand mammon to mean, ‘the belief that everything a person needs, desires or could hope for can be found solely in the physical world. Of course, one problem with this thinking is that it results in people rendering sacred service to the creation rather than the Creator - Romans1: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator…… And Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Mammon, in my opinion, is best illustrated by the imagery of Moses’ bronze serpent hung on the pole in the wilderness. The serpent pictorially says ’look to me, I AM your savior’. Which is, of course, a LIE. Only God saves. Isaiah 43:11 I ,even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no savior. All the praise, the power, and the glory belong to God alone.
The Bible says that God is Life. But most people’s reverence for life has deteriorated drastically. They do not believe that all life is sacred and therefore eternal. The Bible also says that God is Love. But people’s hearts have ‘waxed cold’. Seriously, it is extremely hard to find real love in the world today. It has been said that - “People were created to be loved and things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is that things are being loved and people are being used” - Original author unknown. If we want love, we must grow it in ourselves and let no one or anything wrest it from us. It can start by committing to simple, daily acts of kindness - a kind word, listening to someone when they need it most, a little charity, or compassion for others - that is, passion for the community.
